The products that we mostly suggest for driveway are either the porphyry cubes, or tiles with split or sawn edges.

The porphyry cubes can be:

  • irregular in shape, that we would install in the traditional Italian porphyry cobblestone way  (overlapping arches or either fan shape)
  • regular in size 4″x4″, that we would indeed install in straight lines.

On the other hand, we suggest to install the tiles in parallel rows of the same width, or alternating different widths.

It is always important to make sure the borders of the driveway area are well fixed with mortar. We suggest to use an orthogonal line of tiles, binders or curbstones.

For drypack and liquid grout installation, we recommend thickness 2″ (with a nominal variation from 1 ½” to 2 ½”) or even 3″ thickness. Porphyry stone is very strong (the compression strength of porphyry stone is above 30.000 psi), which is plenty enough for the average type and quantity of traffic in these areas.

On the other hand, installation in sand is also possible. In that case the minimum thickness required is 3” and we require the use of different bonding material.

In a driveway, Drypack and liquid grout setting is very different than sand installation, in terms of appearance and durability. Sand installation is more flexible and will show variations of the flatness over time. On the other hand, drypack is more rigid and durable.
